How to Care for Your Silver Jewelry: Tips from a Professional Silversmith
  • At 28MM Studios, we know your handcrafted jewelry isn’t just an accessory—it’s a little piece of your story. A little care goes a long way in keeping your jewelry just as beautiful as the day you got it.

Be Mindful of Where You Wear It

Silver is durable, but it’s still sensitive to certain environments. Chlorinated swimming pools, salty ocean water, and even the products we use every day—like perfumes, hair dyes, and lotions—can speed up tarnishing or cause surface damage over time.
These products often contain strong chemicals that don’t play well with metal.

To protect your jewelry:

  • Put your jewelry on last, after you’ve applied lotions, perfumes, or hair products.
  • Remove pieces before swimming, showering, or using harsh cleaning agents.

Your Skin Chemistry Is One of a Kind

Here’s a fun fact: your jewelry ages a little differently depending on your body’s unique chemistry. Natural oils and even the pH of your skin can affect how quickly silver tarnishes. That’s why some people’s rings stay bright for ages, while others darken more quickly. You can still wear your pieces during things like handwashing, but try to avoid long or repeated exposure to moisture and chemicals.

Tarnish? Totally Normal.

Tarnishing happens to all silver—it’s just part of the metal’s life cycle. When it does, we suggest:

  • Using a soft silver polishing cloth (we swear by TownTalk, our studio favourite)
  • Cleaning with gentle, circular motions.
  • Avoiding abrasive materials that can scratch or dull the finish.

Bonus: At the end of every workshop, we gift each participant a complimentary polishing cloth—our way of helping you keep your jewelry shining bright from day one.

Important note for oxidised pieces: If your ring has a blackened or patinated finish, don’t use a silver dip! Those harsh solutions can strip away the beautiful oxidisation that makes your piece special. Stick with a gentle cloth or reach out if you’re unsure—we’re happy to help.

Storage Makes a Difference

When you’re not wearing your jewelry, keep it in a soft pouch or cloth-lined box, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Storing pieces separately helps avoid scratches or tangles, especially for delicate chains.

A Final Thought

Jewelry should be worn, loved, and lived in—but a little care along the way helps preserve its magic. If you ever have questions about cleaning or storing a specific piece, we’re always just a message away.
